A year after being pronounced dead, the Republicans are resurgent! Liberals will say that this proves that Obama must move to the left, but Obama will tack to the right. The rightward tilt will prompt a spate of anguished blog posts and Nation editorials wondering why Obama is doing it.

It would even be funny if it wasn’t more like the damn truth.
On the other hand, Owens smacking down Hoffman in NY-23 House race is going to put a significant damper on the Repub’s victory dance. So much for Teabagger carpetbagging. I really did think that the district was too Republican for Owens to suceed and that Scuzzafava’s open backing of the latter would energize the local right-wing base enough for Hoffman to squeeze out a tight victory…but I guess that the Teabagger/Fixed Noise carpetbagging and Hoffman’s complete braindead dismissal of local issues was enough to bite his ass hard. Having Sarah Palin on your side didn’t help matters, either, I guess.

I was for Nader in 2000 – who has gone Randian on us but anyways – so I understand their thinking but as this race showed the teabaggers are killing themselves.
This has long been a Republican seat, but now it moves to the Democrat column even while we have a Democratic Congress and President. So the Congress moves left.

Noam Chomsky is arguing (both on radio and in private posts) that to dismiss the “teabaggers” as right-wing wing-nuts is to miss real people concerned about real issues. Amid the racists and the gun nuts are true libertarians and populists. They have a right to be angry at bailouts of banks and just because they are currently being manipulated by right-wing demagogues that doesn’t mean they will always be so manipulated.
Where are the leftists with leaflets at these right wing rallies speaking to real fears and real complaints about crony capitalism??
If the Ron Paul supporters and the right-wing populists opt for fascism we will only have ourselves to blame for not giving them a more honest and complete message.
(by the way, the victories in the NY 23 and the California 10th [was it the 10th?] bode well for the Democrats in 2010 — at least if there is SOME health care reform bill)

Of course conservative media is saying that Tuesday proved Obama & the donkey party are toast, but it seems to me that New Jersey only proved that they were sick of Speed Racer Corzine and voted in the fat guy. Virginia, I don’t know; my Michigan rustbelt prejudices keep me from any clear understanding of the South.
But betting that Obama will disappoint the left is easy money. He’s LBJ, effective (I hope!) on domestic initiatives while blind to the hemorrhage and immorality of foreign war(s).

Sorry, but one of his major domestic initiatives is to privatize public education, not exactly the most progressive agenda.
And, I’d beware of his intentions regarding Social Security, If I were you.
I’m not sure much of anything is going to get done – juts a lot of yelling between political hacks. The U.S. might have reached a state of advanced dry rot. Landing on the moon was peak empire…and despite a few blips up and down since, the trajectory is clear. Anti-intellectualism is deeply entrenched in all classes of society. The US is still very powerful though, and has the ability to drag the world economy down with it.
